My name is Can. I was born in Belgium to a German mother and Turkish father, but we moved to the UK three months later, meaning I’m quite Anglicized (though I would still call myself Turkish or German rather than English, despite the fact that my grasp of Turkish is tenuous to say the least...). My life is focused around several interests, especially martial arts and poetry, the latter also being my area of academic study since I started university in 1999. The other major focus is of course my girlfriend, who I live with for half the week. I’m currently doing a part-time PhD in English Lit, funded by a part-time job in London.

I'm a keen martial artist, and have experience in various styles. My main experience is in two styles: from 1999-2007, Zhuan Shu Kuan, a striking style. Since November 2006, I've been training BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) at the Roger Gracie Academy in London. Full details of that on my training blog, which also covers my MA background.

You'll find me babbling on various martial art site, such as Bullshido (mainly the Throwdown section), or on various Facebook groups. Some of my other interests are music, film (like many martial art geeks, I'm especially fond of anime), history, art and travel.

My introduction to Conan was the 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a firm favourite of mine. I've also read the comics from Marvel and DC, along with the two volumes of The Conan Chronicles from the 'Fantasy Masterworks' series, and I enjoy the artwork of Frank Frazetta. I signed up here to investigate other good sources of Conan fiction, and also hopefully get some indication of their relative quality.
