  • Hi, YardlHS:

Long-lost Wapitikev, checking in. I've finally found a few moments of free time and am working on completing the Andrew Offut trilogy (primarily Mercenary with additional notes for and from ...Sorcerer and ...SofSkleos).

I notice the additions I made to the Continutiy Notes section of your Sword of Skelos page were all discarded/reverted by you.  Apologies that they were not acceptable (they still needed revisions to be less redundant...but not necessary now).  ;-)

I'd be grateful for any guidelines you can offer for future contributions.

    • Hey there!  I hadn't realized it was you who had done the editing...yeah, it was a little off the format here...one of the rules about wikia in general is to avoid original research, and there was a lot of "some believe" without citations...it's really not the place in the article for speculation.  That usually happens in the page discussions. I see you added a section on magical items, too, which is new, but that seems o, and you did a lot of solid clean up in the text.

    • Hi, YardlHS.  :-)

Waaay back on Feb 27, 2014, when I was just starting to post on the Wikia, I asked (on your wall) if Mystic Items would be an acceptable place to put strange and/or magical items. Tracking those seems valuable since, like Characters, some of them appear in more than one story in the saga.

I can certainly provide citations or references for the "some argue" claims...although every timeline is based on speculation of where a story should go.  A great example of this "argument" is the chronology-table from that very wikia entry: each timeline lists the novel occurring prior to a different story/novel.

Granted, the Grey and Jordan placements are close to each other, temporally, but the deCamp timeline is numerous stories (aka years) later in the character's life.  DeCamp not only places the trilogy after the last Zamora-thief story (his own pastiche "Halls of the Dead") but also after his placement of "God in the Bowl" and "Rogues in the House".  In Victorious and Unconquered, Conan rises to quasi-captain status of a smuggling vessel on the Vilayet operating out of Turan, then joins a militia in "Hand of Nergal", and thereafter the Turanian army.  DeCamp "argues" that Conan is older than the Offutt trilogy says he is.  My "some argue" had not (yet) been revised to state that explicitly.

My own timeline can be found in my Profile, btw (although it only lists stories up to ...Outcast at the moment).

Regarding Continuty Errata, comparing how a character in a Conan story behaves against Howards portrayal of his character, at a similar point, is an established area of discussion by Dale Ripke, Don Herron and other Conan scholars and reviewers online and in print. Continuity Notes seems a fairly close fit for where differences from Howard's character could be noted.

But I'm trying to inform, not hijack the wikia, so I can certainly put Continuity Errata (vis-a-vis Howard) elsewhere.  I can Blog it in my account section, or put it in the page discussions (if I can figure out how to find it...shouldn't it be at the bottom of each article?).

Let me know what you'd prefer and I can revise (all) my other articles to reflect it (for consistency).

      Thanks, again.

      -Wapitikev

  • I have a Conan-based project I think you'll be interested in. Can you shoot me an e-mail at wolverine7230@gmail.com to discuss in more detail?

It has a lot to do with chronology.

    Thanks!

  • Hi YardIHS. First of all, I want to say I think you're doing a great job on this wiki, going through the stories and adding information that the wiki doesn't have. You're dedicated and basically keeping this wiki going.

You may have seen me drop in every so often. I am very slowly reading the Conan stories, but mostly I'm interesting in getting wikis organised properly. In particular, I focus on categories, duplication, interlinking, etc. I started a bit of a cleanup, but I've got as far as I can go without being able to rename and/or delete the unused, misspelled or irrelevant stuff that is cluttering the place up. I've flagged some things for deletion, but there is no standard process for that and it hasn't happened. I'd ask to be given admin privileges so that I can keep going with the tidying, but there doesn't seem to be any process for granting that either. It seems that there is only one bureaucrat, but they haven't been on the wiki in about 5 years.

My point is: I think you should be given bureaucrat rights. I'd support you. The only thing additional it would mean is that you get to choose who else is an Admin. We can ask Wikia Staff to make the change, since the previous AntAllan bureaucrat doesn't seem to be around. What are your thoughts on the matter?

    • I appreciate your help!  Yeah, I stumbled onto this years ago when it was more or less abandoned and I'm trying to remember the process in which I got admin rights...if there was any way to grant more rights I certainly would...if you can find out how to do that it would be awesome.  I only have the opportunity to play around with this infrequently, but my schedule picks up over the summer.  I'm thrilled when anyone pitches in to clean up!

    • Hey. I think the best place to request bureaucrat rights would be http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Adoption:Requests

You can put a link to this thread as evidence that there's support for it, or I can put up the request if you like (but really I think you should do it).

    • Hey. Have you thought any more about requesting to adopt the wiki?

  • Hello,

I'm new here to the Conan Wiki. I'm a big fan of the stories/films/comics, and would like to help out with the wiki. I hope you'll forgive me for saying that this wiki is pretty inactive and bear of content, and could do with a lot of help.

I have a lot of experience with editing, and I've been part of The Elder Scrolls Wiki for a couple of years now. Basically, what I want to know is, what needs the most attention?

    • Huh.  Wonder how I got logged out.

Did Roy Thomas talk about the origin of the black statues somewhere? I haven't gone through all his commentary in the Dark Horse collections yet.

    • I don't know, I haven't read the commentary. If I come across it I'll let you know.

  • Hi, Yardl.

Was up waaaay to early this AM and decided to make a page for Conan the Mercenary to complete the Offutt trilogy...unfortunately dislexic fingers got in the way and I forgot the first R in the title and accidentally created Conan the Mecenary.

Upon noticing my error, I created a correctly named page and copy/pasted all the first page into the corrected one.

Can you delete the page for "Conan the Mecenary" for me?

    Thanx.

    -Wapitikev

    • Thanx, Y.

BTW, I just found the Tools bar (and the customize button) at the bottom of the page (when I'm logged in) and see that I can add a Rename Tool...I'll use that one, next time, so I don't have to make a new page (and bug you to delete it).

Hope you are having a good 2015.

  • HI, YardIHS:

I noticed that Conan and the Sorcerer was moved to a new page (or was deleted and recreated or something).  Sorry if I messed up the original one somehow.  I'm hoping to avoid such mistakes in future, so let me know what to refrain from.

I left for a week's vacation before I finished "...Sorcerer" but I'm back now.  I have a huge work-project on the go, but will fill in the missing Characters and Locations over the weekend.

I'm also ready to finish the movie adaptation for "...the Barbarian" and to start "...the Mercenary".

Question: need some feedback on whether a section regarding "rare or unique items" like the Eye of Erlik or Black Lotus powder would be useful.  I'm searching for a heading-name and wondering if you already have something in-use that I haven't come across.   If not, I'm pondering Props, Artefacts (Artifacts = US spelling), or Esocterica although I'm not keen on the sexual-connotation that some attribute to the latter term.  And "Artefacts" doesn't really describe "Powder of the Black Lotus" all that well.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

    -Kevin

  • Hello,

I wanted to get in touch and see how things are going on your wiki. I am a staff member here at Wikia, and I noticed that your wiki was growing at a great rate but has slowed down recently. Did you run into an issue or is there something you need help with? We have lot of help on our community wiki, staff blog and in the help pages.

Starting today we updated the skin, and I noticed an area is showing as black on your background. You can learn more about the changes here. I put in a request to our Community Development team to help with updating this look. They will stop by here and help update the background. Let me know if you have any specific questions or requests.

  • Hi, my name is Nic and I'm a member of the Wikia Content Development Team. As you may have seen on many wikis such as Call of Duty, there is a new module for the right hand column that displays related videos to the Wiki. This is a new feature that we want to place on your wiki, would you be cool with allowing this? The module can be seen on any page, here is an example .
