Hi. I'm a new editor on the wiki. I've started reading Howard's original Conan stories, and plan to expand the wiki's coverage of them.
I was wondering if you'd be willing to make me an admin. Now, I know that I've been here less than a month, and have less than 150 edits, but I am a bureaucrat on the Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and Age of Empires wikis, and an admin on the Might & Magic wiki (with a total of more than 50,000 edits between the three), so I know what being an admin entails. I also hope you'll take a look at my work on the Publius, Rinaldo, and Dion pages.
If you make me an admin, I plan to delete some of the articles and categories in Category:Candidates for deletion, and remove the links in the welcome messages (context: when a new user edits the wiki, an automatic message may appear on their message wall, thanking them. However, if the new user is a vandal creating a spam page, the message will still link to the deleted spam page, cluttering up the Wanted Pages list. Changing the links to bolding will mean that this no longer happens, avoiding the dead links cluttering up the list). Being an admin will allow me to deal with problems like these as I find them.
If you decline my request, I will not be offended, and I will continue to contribute to the wiki.
Hi there, Narve! I appreciate what you've been doing! I really have no idea or interest in the behind the scenes wiki stuff that you seem to understand (I kind of fell into this as a passion to put together a Conan timeline and sort of took over the board when nobody else was doing it!) I'd welcome the help, although I am a touch particular on what goes into the pages (I just don't want an overwhelming list of categories like "animals mentioned in the story" and "magical items mentioned in the story" type stuff).
I'm actually on a two week road trip right now, checking the internet when I can (although I took along a King Conan trade so I could get some work done!), so forgive me if I take a couple days to respond. How does one make an admin?
I'm pretty excited to have finally found some consistent free time since my edits on a lost account a few years back, and am anticipating to begin just as consistent contributions to expand the wiki. Figuring out some of the formatting and editing tricks will be a learning curve, but I look forward to it! Happy to be back.
That said, I wanted to reconfirm some of the details of what we are aiming to write here. The given info encourages sharing detail of any and all aspects of the Hyborian universe, whether from film, game, book, comic, television series, or other. Is this still so? If it is I anticipate making some sizable additions for some time to come haha. If not, I'd be wondering what the limitations on appropriate sources would be. The only one I rule out personally is no incorporating fanfiction pages, which I assume this wiki excludes as well, so all is good there.
Well, this is more a hobby passion of mine, to kind of force me to read through the books and comics in a rough chronological order. If you look at the earliest-set REH stories, it was kind of a rough template, but it gives you an idea of the format...I was just going through the Ace books with an occasional foray into the novels. Check out the write-up for Conan the Liberator. Someone came in and started adding a lot of personal commentary and entries for fauna and magical items which I don't really care for, but I figured I'd clean them up as time goes on. Right now I've just been focusing on the Marvel comic, up to about issue 186 or something. I would love for someone to write about the Dark Horse comic or the role playing games, and an ultimate goal is to add more scholarly information to the REH stories...I really just focused on the basics and didn't get into the backgrounds. Plus, adding material to the locations is always nice! I pretty much just add info as I come across it in the stories, such as political or geopgraphical information - check out the entry for Argos for example.
Practically the same thing as yourself more or less. A while back I did edits as Kaebus (my lost account) and made a majority of the Thulsa Doom page, King Osric, Mountain of Power, Wheel of Pain and other such pages relating to the first film. In similar likeness to yourself I suppose, I was creating pages (or vastly editing them with additional information) as I was progressing through the material, though I had only made progress through rewatching the original Conan the Barbarian over and over and over again before I was caught up in life again.
I too was planning on this being a long time hobby to get myself through the material. I've seen all three movies many times over, and have played the MMO for a decent amount of time as well as Exiles since its release, but never got around to the literary content which is what I am most interested in since that is where a majority of the material lies.
I'm anticipating to start with the REH novels first, then moving on to the comics starting in chronological order as you have, however, like with the original Conan the Barbarian film, I plan to re-read each work many times over before moving to the next to ensure I have as much detail as I can extracted from them for the Wiki to be properly fitted with (and maybe moreso for myself to better understand the entirety of the Hyborian universe as I go). So I plan on this to be a very long term process.
Eventually, of course, I will make it to the content you and others have already covered, and I will likely simply flare out some details if they were skipped over or accidentally miswritten, along with grammar corrections if any show up.
My question in my first message about content inquiry was more related to which sources you'd prefer I draw from. For example there is a lot of descriptions and information about the Hyborian age in Age of Conan (the MMO), as well as characters who don't show up in any other works of the universe, but since there is already and Age of Conan and Conan Exiles wiki, would this be redundant? Or would you be okay with me writing in pages for characters/locations from the games? Ideally, I would only write in their lore and backstories, as opposed to the Age of Conan wiki which moreso describes their functions as NPCs and the quests they are related to.
I do plan to run a session of the pen and paper roleplaying game, or at least read through the materials it offers in the near future, so I can happily fill that area for you.
Awesome...ages and ages ago I started putting in Conan and the Tower of the Elephant Mongoose adventure, but barely scratched the surface. I'm utterly out of the loop on the Age of Conan game, except for the books, which I feel could belong in here. I'm not huge on individual entries for one-offs, but adding information to existing locales or major players would be fantastic. Yeah, the early stuff needs to be checked over again, and I kind of streamlined things as I went along.
Alright, I'll get started this weekend likely. As I go, I may ask you too look over a couple pages I make to be sure the format is acceptable to you. I have the blessing and curse of extreme OCD where things will look neat and uniform, however if one is wrong then they will all be wrong ha.
Hi YardIHS. First of all, I want to say I think you're doing a great job on this wiki, going through the stories and adding information that the wiki doesn't have. You're dedicated and basically keeping this wiki going.
You may have seen me drop in every so often. I am very slowly reading the Conan stories, but mostly I'm interesting in getting wikis organised properly. In particular, I focus on categories, duplication, interlinking, etc. I started a bit of a cleanup, but I've got as far as I can go without being able to rename and/or delete the unused, misspelled or irrelevant stuff that is cluttering the place up. I've flagged some things for deletion, but there is no standard process for that and it hasn't happened. I'd ask to be given admin privileges so that I can keep going with the tidying, but there doesn't seem to be any process for granting that either. It seems that there is only one bureaucrat, but they haven't been on the wiki in about 5 years.
My point is: I think you should be given bureaucrat rights. I'd support you. The only thing additional it would mean is that you get to choose who else is an Admin. We can ask Wikia Staff to make the change, since the previous AntAllan bureaucrat doesn't seem to be around. What are your thoughts on the matter?
I appreciate your help! Yeah, I stumbled onto this years ago when it was more or less abandoned and I'm trying to remember the process in which I got admin rights...if there was any way to grant more rights I certainly would...if you can find out how to do that it would be awesome. I only have the opportunity to play around with this infrequently, but my schedule picks up over the summer. I'm thrilled when anyone pitches in to clean up!
I'm new here to the Conan Wiki. I'm a big fan of the stories/films/comics, and would like to help out with the wiki. I hope you'll forgive me for saying that this wiki is pretty inactive and bear of content, and could do with a lot of help.
I have a lot of experience with editing, and I've been part of The Elder Scrolls Wiki for a couple of years now. Basically, what I want to know is, what needs the most attention?
Oh, I've been tinkering with this thing for years...going through the books and comics section by section and filling out details. Basically, go with whatever strikes your fancy! Just look at the generally recognized format of the entries that are already here, and have some fun adding what you can!
Thank you! Oh, and is there a specific category for lore, and how much of it should be written down? REH had a lot of lore to his works, but it was not very obvious, and a lot of it is speculative. Some wikis get really annoyed at you for writing down speculation, so I was wondering what your take on it was for this wiki?
Well, if you want to create a page for Lore, I don't see why not. If you want to add a section to an existing article, well, that might be case by case basis...if there's some meat to those bones, that's one thing, but speculation and unsourced stuff we're not too interested in!
The example I was thinking of was the black statues from the story Iron Shadows in the Moon (I think?), where it is implied (particularly in the comic version) that they have a definite origin, and a story behind them. However, it is never really written down, just hinted at.
Was up waaaay to early this AM and decided to make a page for Conan the Mercenary to complete the Offutt trilogy...unfortunately dislexic fingers got in the way and I forgot the first R in the title and accidentally created Conan the Mecenary.
Upon noticing my error, I created a correctly named page and copy/pasted all the first page into the corrected one.
Can you delete the page for "Conan the Mecenary" for me?
BTW, I just found the Tools bar (and the customize button) at the bottom of the page (when I'm logged in) and see that I can add a Rename Tool...I'll use that one, next time, so I don't have to make a new page (and bug you to delete it).
I noticed that Conan and the Sorcerer was moved to a new page (or was deleted and recreated or something). Sorry if I messed up the original one somehow. I'm hoping to avoid such mistakes in future, so let me know what to refrain from.
I left for a week's vacation before I finished "...Sorcerer" but I'm back now. I have a huge work-project on the go, but will fill in the missing Characters and Locations over the weekend.
I'm also ready to finish the movie adaptation for "...the Barbarian" and to start "...the Mercenary".
Question: need some feedback on whether a section regarding "rare or unique items" like the Eye of Erlik or Black Lotus powder would be useful. I'm searching for a heading-name and wondering if you already have something in-use that I haven't come across. If not, I'm pondering Props,Artefacts (Artifacts = US spelling), or Esocterica although I'm not keen on the sexual-connotation that some attribute to the latter term. And "Artefacts" doesn't really describe "Powder of the Black Lotus" all that well.
I wanted to get in touch and see how things are going on your wiki. I am a staff member here at Wikia, and I noticed that your wiki was growing at a great rate but has slowed down recently. Did you run into an issue or is there something you need help with?
We have lot of help on our community wiki, staff blog and in the help pages.
Starting today we updated the skin, and I noticed an area is showing as black on your background. You can learn more about the changes here. I put in a request to our Community Development team to help with updating this look. They will stop by here and help update the background. Let me know if you have any specific questions or requests.
Hi! I tried giving the skin update a shot and here is what it came out to with filling in that blank space in the middle. Let me know if this is good for you, and I (or you) can exchange the current skin for this one :)
