Synopsis[]

Conan, accompanied by some of his crew, members of the Watambi tribe, and Tindaga of the Dragon Riders encounter a wild boar. Despite Tindaga's attempts to get Conan killed, the barbarian prevails and continues the hunt for Belit. The pirate queen is in the clutches of Amra, who seems to have a rapport with a black lion. When Belit refuses Amra's advances, he knocks her out and takes her to his camp, where he tells her his story. Meanwhile, Tindaga attempts to escape Conan's clutches again, but is felled by a poisonous snake, leaving Conan guideless in Amra's territory. Amra takes Belit to his home - the Lair of the Lions, a ruined city full of treasure and guarded by lions. There Amra's curent paramour, Makeda, attacks Belit in jealousy, and is thrown out by Amra. As she flees the city, Makeda is found by Conan, who demands she take him to Belit, but Makeda reveals that in revenge she has cast a spell releasing the living dead into the city.

Flashback[]

Amra was an Aquilonian child who sailed south with his father but was washed ashore in a storm. Only Amra and his father survived, but his father was killed by a local tribe and the boy was taken as a slave. The tribesmen found and killed a lion cub, a token of good luck, but the lion's pack slaughtered them all in revenge, save Amra who was protected by the mother lion as a replacement for her slain cub. Amra grew up with the pack and soon became the leader, taking over a ruined city and filling it with golden tribute from other tribes, who also sent brides for the insatiable Amra.
