Synopsis[]
In a Cimmerian village, old men talk about the Siege of Venarium when they first saw Conan. He has recently returned to the village and is leading a hunting party and sharing stories, including one of how many many years ago Conan was seduced by the local forest priestess Ursla, when they are attacked by a group of Picts. Conan leads the men in fighting, but young Pelon is overwhelmed with fear. Conan attempts to explain Cimmerian ways to the lad but they are ambushed by a bear but during the distraction, Pelon is dragged away by men wearing bearskins. He is dragged before young Conobar, priest of the wild, who demands justice for the slain bear. Meanwhile, Conan is hunting for Pelon and comes across Conobar in the woods. They fight, though Conan is reluctant, recognizing that the young lad is merely trying to avenge the creatures of the forest. Conan eventually slays the boy and a rescued Pelon reveals that Conobar is the son of Ursla and a wandering warrior. Conan realizes he has slain his own son and sadly carries the body away.
